The Art City project is a series of phased interventions that provide unique studio space for the 22 artists currently working at the site. The introduction of tool cribs, weather protection and personalized shelters are a result of the removal of the majority of the structures from the site due to City issued code infringements.
The design effort consists of to three primary components. First is the communal ‘Tool Cribs’, which utilizes converted ISO shipping containers. The second is a series of ‘Art Rafts’ that are used to define the individual’s studio space and provide an indoor element to their outdoor work area. The ‘Rafts’ have been designed to be constructed from the reclaimed lumber of the previously dismantled structures. The third layer of the working environment is the tent/canopy that will provide protection from the elements while maintaining the artists desire to work outside. The Canopy will also serve as a backdrop for digital projections and 2D work
