Open Container Studio is a 300 sq ft. design prototype exploring reuse potential of the shipping container. Artist studio space was created from altered and conjoined 8’x8’x20’steel/plywood cargo boxes. The double unit generates a modular system with capacity for reconfiguration as a multi-unit studio complex (images 1-2). The 2 room prototype functions as a self-contained workspace with electrical hook-up, accommodating a kitchenette, drawing/dinette bar, work/exhibition space and recreation wing with reading/reclining quarters and a media research center. Most materials for project construction were found, recycled or donated. Functional art furniture made by student artists included plywood bench, bar + flooring, cork/resin stools, stuffed animal lounger, murphy bed/drawing table, boody-bench, cafeteria tray media center, sun canopy and palette decking. Project was produced from volunteer student labor and in-kind donation of consultation services. Total hard costs: $12,000.
